Below are the essays written by the students responsible for this blog. The essays talk about the geography of the Philippines, the natural phenomena it experiences and how geography affects the way people live.

The Philippines is an archipelago consisting of 7,107 islands. The country is located in South Eastern Asia and is located near the equator. The three largest islands are Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. It is at the south of China, Japan and Korea. The north of Indonesia, Borneo and Brunei. West of Micronesia, Marianas, Palau and Guam. East of Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia. It is also bordered by the West Philippine Sea, Celebes Sea and the Philippine sea. The Philippines is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and the typhoon belt in the Pacific.

The Philippines experience lots of natural disasters because of its geography. It is right beside the Pacific Ocean which lets in lots of typhoons and it is part of an earthquake belt which lets in more and more natural disasters. We had heavy rains and floods because of the illegal loggings happening all around.

Geography is a major aspect to the living of people of the Philippines. Geography talks about our location in the world. Our location is right above the equator and below the Tropic of Cancer. Our location affects our climate. Wherever you are located affects the path of the suns rays towards you. A location like this creates a tropical climate. Snce our climate is tropical, our natural resources must be able to adapt to the environment. Our natural resources depend on what kind of climate a place has. The natural resources are then used by us. We then use our natural resources for our culture because whatever our resources are, that is what we will use for our activities. So the outline goes as location in the world chooses the climate of the land, the climate then picks our natural resources then our natural resources create our culture which is a major aspect of our life because we are our culture.

The Philippines is made up of 7,107 islands an archipelago found in South East Asia. Its location has led it to become a cultural trade among different countries like Chinese, Spaniards, Americans, etc. The country’s total area is 300,000 sq km, land being 298,170 sq km and water with 1,830 sq km. The Philippines has one of the longest coastlines in the world since it is broken up by the sea. Most Filipinos live on or near the coast so they rely on marine resources. It’s surrounded by different bodies of water namely, the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Philippine sea to the northeast, South China sea to the west, Luzon strait to the north, Sulu and Celebes sea just below. It has a tropical wet climate and two main seasons: dry and wet. The summer monsoon which occurs from May to October brings heavy rains to most of the archipelago, whereas the winter monsoon brings cooler and drier air from December to February.

Just like every country, the Philippines experiences natural phenomena. The Philippines sit astride the typhoon belt, and it suffers an annual onslaught of dangerous storms from July through October. All of the Philippine islands are prone to earthquakes. The Philippine Fault has one of the longest fault in Asia which consists of a series of seismic faults that produce several earthquakes per year, most of which are not felt. It belongs to the Pacific Ring of Fire or the circum-Pacific belt / circum-Pacific seismic belt since the islands are volcanic in origin. Most volcanoes in the country are active like Mt. Mayon, Mt. Pinatubo and Taal Volcano

Geography can greatly affect the way people live. The natural resources present in each area can affect their livelihood. If they live near the bay area, different marine resources can be obtained with fishing as their livelihood. Those with small farm lots rely on agriculture and livestock. They grow plants on fertile land and use animals like carabaos to plow the fields. Yet natural occurrences can also affect them. When the country experiences calamities like typhoons or earthquakes, it can damage the crops the farmers are growing. It can also damage the fish ponds of those near the bay area. Geography greatly affects how we live. We just have to know the advantages of our area and be prepared whenever something occurs.
